- Joyce Michaelson joined the
Montclair Township Council as Councilor At-Large on July 23, 2002.

Councilor
Michaelson brings to public service proven skills in economics,
finance and strategic planning. She has also earned a reputation for
building effective community collaborations and fostering successful
public/private partnerships. A resident since 1968, Joyce Michaelson
has helped shape public education in Montclair for more than 30 years,
nine of them on the Montclair Board of Education and three as its
president. Appointed by one mayor, she was reappointed by two
subsequent mayors. Earlier she held posts that included president of
the Montclair Council of PTA’s and chair of the Citizen Advisory
Task Force on the magnet system.

Joyce
Michaelson chairs the board of trustees of the Montclair Fund for
Educational Excellence, which she founded in 1991. The MFEE is a
foundation that supports public education in Montclair, raising funds
and awarding grants for programs such as teacher-initiated classroom
projects and summer scholarships for students. The MFEE also partners
with the school system to realize district-wide goals such as
enhancing school libraries, establishing after-school tutoring
centers, creating small learning communities within the high school,
and addressing the achievement gap.

Joyce
was raised in New York City and earned a bachelor’s degree in
economics from Wellesley College, followed by graduate work in
economics at NYU. She also is a graduate of Penn State’s Executive
Management Program.

A
career in administration, planning and finance has provided Joyce with
a unique set of abilities that serve Montclair well. She began her
career at New Jersey Bell in market and opinion research before moving
on to long range and strategic planning for the firm. At AT&T she
worked in financial assurance, pricing and strategic alliances. As
Executive Assistant to the President of Bloomfield College, Joyce
Michaelson worked with the President and Board of Trustees in the
areas of planning, fund raising and administration.

Her
volunteer affiliations have included the Wellesley Centers for Women,
Reach Out to Schools advisory committee; The Aloha Foundation’s
development and strategic Planning committees; the Montclair
Counseling Center; the Newark School System State External Review
Team, finance team; the Junior League of Montclair-Newark; and the
Montclair Art Museum, where she is a trustee and has served on the
education, finance and investments committees.
- Joyce raised her family in
Montclair, and both her daughters are graduates of Montclair High
School. Robin, MHS ’85, is a freelance editor and writer. Patty, MHS
’87, is a full-time mother. Joyce is married to retired school
superintendent John LaVigne, whose children Janette, George and Nancy
are also Montclair High graduates.
